‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s journey from injury table to scoring with the Basque club
Thehe first time the Spanish forward competed in the UK, an teenage representing Athletic Bilbao B against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Adams Park in September 2015, he hit the target. The second time he appeared in England, against the Black Cats following that, he scored. His third outing, against the Citizens six weeks after that, well, he scored again. Upon his comeback to the northwest to play against the Red Devils at Leigh Sports Village in that year, he found the back of the net. It was a superb volley, as well. “Actually,” he remarks, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve ever scored.” Thus the club did what was necessary: he was replaced.
“I was furious,” the Athletic striker reveals, and then he starts laughing. “I’m sure there’s footage. Our match against United and I was in fine form. I wasn’t allowed to feature the latter period: I was without a signed deal, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, as you’d expect. I don’t know about Newcastle being interested, but I came across reports about Man United, the typical thing. It’s unclear if it was accurate, but supposing an offer came, my desire was to remain at the club. It’s a privilege.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At Lezama, Bilbao, the day’s first practice is about to start; after it, the short journey to the airport and another trip to the UK, on this occasion to take on the Magpies in the Champions League on the upcoming match. Just saying those two words makes Guruzeta smile. This is proving a difficult season for the club, partially owing to the requirements of competing at this level. Losing in stoppage time in the weekend clash, they have won only one of their past eight league games and fallen to the Gunners and Dortmund in European competition. Yet, consider the broader view, the memorable evenings and future challenges, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation about him.
In the the period since he had come back to Athletic, Guruzeta has been a final four contender in Europe, prevented from reaching a final at home by Manchester United, and has ridden an historic vessel through the waterway flanked by countless supporters after lifting the trophy, the team’s initial silverware in four decades. He’s now the top goal-getter in the Champions League, where they are countercultural and debuting in ten years. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.
The player believed it hard enough just to break into the senior squad and that proved true. The son of the one-time rival player his father and a regular attendee at the club that are now his rivals, Guruzeta is a product of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that produced the coach, Xabi Alonso and the Bournemouth manager. His move to Athletic came at his teens but after his first-team bow in August 2018, he suffered a ACL injury, being released, a drop in category and a return before he could truly get a chance, coming back aged 26 to enjoy the highlights of their lives.
“You go into the academy thinking you won’t reach the top level but with every stage you advance through you’re remaining and you can see it getting closer. You arrive and then … you have to leave.” He featured briefly in six matches in a handful of matches between his first game and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches with them and I suffered the ACL injury.
“A massive setback but I look back on it as a beneficial experience because it made me change the way I saw things. Recovering from a long-term injury is hard, but it’s beneficial. You develop habits new to you. Previously I was casual, but I attended practice and then go home, like when you’re a kid. At the complex, facilities are comprehensive, so utilize it all. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. If your hips aren’t balanced, address that. With decent ankle function, improve it more. All those ‘silly things’: perform them.
“At the top level you’re going to face physical challenges who have experienced contact countless occasions. They’re so strong. I look at photos of me before: I had slender legs. Injuries are inevitable. Current photos and the improvement is clear. Injury made me see that. Sessions end, but there’s more to do. Everyone else is ready, really ready; you have to be too.”
Minutes are crucial. Guruzeta departed upset in that year, aged 23, dropping into the second division. With Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he got three strikes in forty appearances. At Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the he found his form. “Many experience this: loans, terminated contracts. If you turn it round, dedication, confidence, and when eventually they need someone for your role, they might come back for you. You have to be ready. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, compete continentally, and make the UCL … pfff.”
No wonder he says savor the moment. Especially after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. Previously the main threat with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
