Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is departing from the board at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a batch of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
The economist commented in a statement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have served, enthusiastic about the prospects of the enterprise, and eagerly await tracking their progress".
The former Harvard president, who once presided over Harvard University, declared on recently that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.
Message Exchange
The recently released messages revealed that the official exchanged messages with the financier until the day before his 2019 detention for suspected human trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the AI firm stated it understood the economist's choice to resign.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the insight he brought to the governing body," the company stated.
Legislative Background
This news arrives after the two houses of Congress voted on this week to endorse a legislation that would mandate the Department of Justice to release its documents on the case.
The legislation will subsequently move to the administration of the White House for approval. Trump has stated he intends to sign the bill, after changing his position on the subject following objections from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of financier-linked correspondence released by the House Oversight Committee last week referenced numerous high-profile figures in the billionaire's past associates, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The communications showed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with he often seeking to introduce the academic to notable global figures.
Personal Accountability
After the correspondence were shared with the public, the former official stated he accepted "total ownership for my misguided choice to maintain corresponding with the financier".
He added that he desired "to restore trust and repair connections with the persons nearest to me".
Previous Positions
Summers served in high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; functioning as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under the former leader.
He led Harvard from the early 2000s and continues to be a faculty member there. When announcing his withdrawal from public commitments earlier on this week, he indicated he would persist with his educational duties.
Other Impacts
Following his declaration on Monday, the Washington think tank, a liberal think tank in the capital where the professor was a researcher, confirmed that the economist was not associated with the group.
He entered the leadership of OpenAI, which creates the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to replace its CEO the company leader.
