Every quarter of an hour or so, an ageing diesel railway carriage arrives at a spray-painted station. Nearby, a law enforcement alarm cuts through the near-constant road noise. Commuters hurry past collapsing, ivy-covered garden fences as storm clouds gather.

It is maybe the last place you anticipate to find a perfectly formed vineyard. However James Bayliss-Smith has cultivated four dozen established plants sagging with round mauve berries on a rambling garden plot situated between a line of historic homes and a local rail line just above the city town centre.

The conservationist, a documentary producer who has contributed to Netflix's Great National Parks series and BBC Two's gardening shows, was inspired to plant grapes after seeing her neighbor's grapevines.
